Role Purpose:

To play a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth operation of the food manufacturing process. The Shift Manager will oversee and coordinate the activities of employees during their assigned shift, from the shopfloor. This includes supervising staff, delegating tasks and maintaining a smooth workflow.

The Shift Manager is responsible for enforcing company policies and procedures, addressing any issues that arise during the shift, and providing guidance and support to their team members. The Shift Manager will ensure that consistency, quality, Health & Safety and productivity are maintained throughout the shift. The most senior role on site in the absence of the site manager. Accountable for the success of the shift, using tools including DRM & Short Interval Control to ensure the optimal running from start to finish.

Health, Safety and Environment

o Ensure safety is paramount, actively leading by example delivering an accident free culture

o Ensure all areas under their control adhere to the appropriate health and safety and environmental legislation.

o Ensure strict adherence to all health and safety and food safety guidelines as outlined in the Health & Safety Manual.

o Ensure all equipment checks are completed before the start of each shift, to validate that all machinery and tools are in good working order.

o Ensure that all team members are adequately trained in health and safety, food safety, and tasks relevant to their job role using the Thrive platform to validate.

o Maintain thorough records of safety inspections, incidents, and training.

o Ensure that sanitation standards are met, with a specific focus on food safety.

o Monitor and verify that all team members are following correct processes for handling allergens and vegan products to prevent cross-contamination.

o The prompt reporting of hazards & Accidents

o Completion of all necessary Health & Safety and Environmental actions, reports, and documentation via GoAudit checks

o Conduct regular compliance checks to ensure that safety and hygiene standards are consistently maintained throughout the shift.

o Responsibility for compliance with the PPE requirements for the team

o Responsibility for any unannounced audits from either internal H&S team, or local authorities, e.g. HSE, FSA.

People

· Deliver daily Team briefings to ensure the team are engaged and understand what is required of them on each shift

· Deliver the GLINT action plan as set out by the Site Manager

· Manage the team holiday calendar

· Absence Management of team members as set out in the Absence Management Policy

· Responsible for Team Member recruitment. Liaising with the Talent Acquisition Partners to deliver an effective recruitment campaign within an efficient timescale.

· Responsible for new starter onboarding and compliance training completion.

· Ensure Right to work documentation is up to date for all Team Members

· Maintain the Site skills matrix for all Team Members including compliance training

· Conduct Team Member 1-2-1\’s on a regular basis. Agree individual development plans and support their delivery.

· Liaising with the Manufacturing HR People Partner on all ER issues and escalating when necessary

· Support and develop all Team Members with on the job coaching and feedback.

Quality

o Oversee and conduct thorough inspections of the production and processing functions, and finished products to ensure they meet quality standards.

o Enforce quality assurance processes to maintain consistency in product quality, validated by the site HDI score

o Ensure that manufacturing processes and products adhere to all relevant quality standards

o Collaborate with the shift team to identify opportunities for process improvements that enhance product quality and efficiency.

o Prioritise customer satisfaction by addressing quality concerns and implementing improvements based on feedback through the HDI scores

o Ensure compliance to the quality standards as laid out in the build cards.

o Prepare for and participate in quality audits as needed.

o Champion product quality standards, ensuring WIBIT (Would I buy it) is adopted at every point of production and processing.

o Investigate consumer complaints and identify root cause and put measures in place to prevent reoccurrence.

o Develop a relationship with local Fresh stores and pro-actively gain feedback on doughnut quality

COGS – Cost of Goods Sold

Ensure quality spot-checks are carried out throughout the shift ensuring product meets the company\’s recipe card standards.

Effective weekly stock counting and reconciliations are completed on time, in full. Ordering of stock is completed on time.

Focus on product yield tracking and corrective actions to improve/control performance

Keyline Tracking of major ingredient types and implement corrective actions to address any adverse results.

Ensure complaint stock allocation and portioning, to validate stock is being controlled and utilised to the correct volumes

Manage and participate in the parameter checks to validate production is running to standard, and minimise stock waste

Participate in Processing and Production Masterclasses to become an expert in all aspects of the site processes.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

Relevant food manufacturing/bakery industry experience

Experience in continuous improvement processes and methodology

Leadership and people management skills – the experience of managing teams in an FMCG manufacturing environment

IT literate

Good verbal and numerate skills

Role details

  • Shift – Day shift starting times 6am – 8am – 10-hour shift which includes breaks.
  • Working 5days over 7
  • Managing 20- 25 staff may be more in busy times.
